MAKING SENSE OF THE THC FAMILY
There are many different compounds people may be referring to when talking about THC. Understanding the differences of these compounds is required today when searching the marketplace. Did you know that many people are selling “THC” without disclosing the actual compounds or strength? This can all be remedied when you are aware of the subtle (and sometimes, not-so-subtle) differences in these cannabinoids. Read on below to learn more…
INTRODUCTION TO THC COMPOUNDS
THC comes in many shapes and sizes. Did you know the chemical characteristics of each compound ultimately determine its name and effects? Some of today’s most elusive forms of THC can be found if you know where to look! Today we are taking a deeper dive into THCP, D8THC, THCO, HHC, and THCV to help understand these compounds and find out how they may be even more powerful when combined.
CLASSIFICATION OF THC COMPOUNDS
THCP: An exciting novel phorolic cannabinoid, THCP, or THP isolate has shown sedative and analgesic properties resembling those of THC. THCP may show activation of the cannabinoid receptors up to 30 times or more than D9THC. The familiar D9THC molecule contains an alkyl group comprising 5 carbon atoms, THCP has seven.
D8THC: Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol is an isomer of CBD and can be abbreviated as D8, D8 THC, D8THC, Δ8THC, or Δ8. D8THC is being studied for its psychoactive properties and its effectiveness as antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and for its possible neuroprotective properties. Delta-8 THC binds with the CB1 receptor, similar to Delta-9 THC.
THCO: THC-O-Acetate or THC Acetate is created through acetylated extract. THCO is said to be roughly 3 times as potent as Delta 9 THC and 5 times more potent than Delta 8. THC-O can take up to twice as long to kick in, though users claim powerful, long lasting effects.
HHC: Hexahydrocannabinol is created by hydrogenating hemp extract. Hydrogenation helps stabilize the compounds and provides a relaxing cannabinoid experience users say is smooth and mildly euphoric with reduced anxiety. HHC is currently being studied for anti-tumor properties.
THCV: THCV has three carbons on its alkyl side chain, compared to D9THC’s five. While the rare so-called “sports-car cannabinoid” THCV may be similar to THC molecularly, it seems to provide a variety of different effects from it’s near cousin THC. THCV has been studied for use as an appetite suppressant, for regulation of blood sugar levels, the reducing of panic attacks, inflammation reduction, bone growth stimulation, and more.
